140-Year-Old Confederate $10 “Blueback” Bank Note

Confederate Banknote The South rises again in this exciting Confederate bank note issued during the Civil War. Bank notes from the Civil War era are in greater demand than ever — and this $10 Confederate note is no exception. With its war-related vignette of two horseman pulling a caisson with three artillery men and a cannon, this note has been one of the most popular of all notes issued by the Confederacy. Also depicted is Confederate Secretary of State R.M.T. Hunter. This unique 7-3/8” x 3” note is called a “Blueback” because, unlike most Confederate currency that was blank on the back, its back was printed in blue ink — blue-bellied Yankee blue ink!

Confederate bank notes were the official currency of the South. Each bank note was signed and cut by hand. Fractional currency was genuine paper money issued in various amounts under one dollar. Confederate bonds were sold by the South to wealthy plantation owners and others to support the war effort. Many of these bonds were backed by the promise of a future shipment of cotton. When the Confederacy fell, many despairing Southerners destroyed their bonds, tokens and paper money, believing them to be obsolete and worthless.
